EARLVILLE

Hitty Gertrude Bell has been one busy and popular little girl here on her visit to Earlville,NY, which is near the geographical center of the state. We've had many adventures, and you will be hearing more details about them from her lips and journal later. We have some pics taken with a camera (to be developed) and some taken on a digital camera which my daughter tells me are good. ( I haven't seen them yet.) Her first adventure was to go to doll club over in Oneonta. Next we went to church and on to the big car show in Norwich. Next was a visit to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. On June 5 she attended the Sherburne Pageant of Bands and the next day was Doll Day at the Chenango County Historical Society Museum in Norwich. Yesterday she went to a car show in Bainbridge,NY and then on to farmer John's dairy farm. We still have a few more adventures planned for the next few days and then she'll be on her way to her next destination. It's been wonderful having her visit our little village and home. The little Hitty girls and I just love her to pieces. Hitty Hugs, Nancy S.

HGB and her pals at the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat museum. My sister made the big dolls.
They are lifesize and the children who visit the museum are allowed to dress and undress them.

Hitty Gertrude Bell posing in a large diorama at the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat museum.
There were sweet little figures in this diorama that she made friends with. My sister made the little people.
These scenes depict the work done at the canal site in the 1850's. This is a part of the old Erie Canal.

The top picture shows her in front of a scale model of one of the barges. The boats were pulled by mules.
People lived on the barges. Until recently, an old lady who actually lived on one used to go to the
museum and give talks about her life in those days.

Hitty Gertrude Bell tells how the mules drew the barges on the canal.

Here is Hitty Gertrude Bell again posing in front of a painting done by a retired Dr.
who is a volunteer at the museum. He is in his late 80's. The other picture is HGB
outdoors with some of her friends and the canal in the background.

Hitty Gertrude Bell, an expert in archaeology, explains to the class the steps to take when participating in a "dig". Then she shows how the artifacts are carefully scrubbed with brushes afterward. We don't yet have the picture of her taken outdoors on the site where she found pottery chards and other interesting artifacts.
