Star Trek Uniforms
The Star Trek uniform is actually sized from the
uniform pattern in the Star Trek Technical Manual. Seams are included
in the pattern. Using a velour knit (we all know the colors), I faked
in the curves from the pieces by placing matching seams together. Then
I followed the combined edges with a running stitch following the
original seam lines. I then did a tiny tuck over the running stitch to
fake-in the seam line looks. This also had the advantage of fitting the
uniform closer to the Hitty body. The sleeve edge to sleeve edge legnth shoould be 6 1/2". the back hem to front hem should be 7". The collar is a double sided piece of double- sided black satin ribbon. I stitched it on the neck seam line as indicated on the pattern after all the other seams had been done. I left enough out to tuck inside the hollow tube I then formed by stitching on the other side of the neck seam, thus encasing the knit fabric for a smooth finish..This will fit the Raikes Hittys. Underwear is standard issue, and can be matched to the uniform fabric or not as desired. |
The sleeve edge to sleeve edge length shoould be 6 1/2".

Now about the kimono: These are lined pieces to make it easier- really. The body of the kimono pattern when piece 1A is taped to piece !B should measure 13" by 3".Sleeves(piece 3 ) are 7 !/4" by 2". Collar (piece 2) is 1" by 8 1/2". and the front additions(piece 4) are 5 3/4" by 1 1/4"( the lower edge is 3 3/4". Having stated that, nothing needs to be totally exact. You can tuck excess inside folds- really. There should be inside color fabric and outside color fabric. Have one outside and one inside color each of the body, two of each sleeve pattern, two of the front additions and one collar which will match the outside fabric. Do not cut up the body center yet! Sew the outside color to the inside color for the sleeves, and, leaving a small space to turn them inside out, which you will then sew happily shut. Press flat, but do not make sharp points at the edges. Sew the long sections of the front additions front to back. Sew their hem. Do not turn Starting 1/2 " from the center, sew the body pieces together.End 1/2" from the center . Find the middle of the fabric, both up and down, and mark the lines. The front center can now be cut up to the triangle of the neck. Note that the back of the neck is the back of a triangle. Carefully trim this out along with the small straight sections. Place the short section of the front additions, right side to right side, hem matching hem for legnth, to the body. Sew together. I find this works best for me sewing from the top to the hem and going back up creating one smooth piece. Now turn the body carefully inside out. That raw edge will be covered by the collar strip.Press the body. Relocate the back neck edge by folding the body gently in half. Mark the side seams. this will be the center of the sleeves Match sleeve center to this point . sew to body 1" on either side (2") total. Press again if you wish. Now fold sleeves in half and starting 1" from that center fold, sew them closed - in front and at the bottom, ONLY. Since Hitty is female, gently tuck the front edge of the seam into the curve as you round from the front to the bottom of the sleeve. If this is a squared edge, you've just indicated VERY STRONGLY that your Hitty is a guy.Leave the side to the body open. Only guys have closed backs to their sleeves. Now measure 1" down from the end of the seam from the shoulder.Sew the front to the back, matching hem lines. It's looking so cute! (The word in romanji is Kawaii!) Now fold that Large Tuck, indicated on the body piece, to bring up the hem and create that form fitting wrap in the center Hitty's hem should be about ankle legnth- unless she is going geisha and needs a bit more legnth. This is where I stitch the tuck in place along the inside. Find the center of the collar piece. Find the center of the back of the neck. Gently ease the collar onto the raw neck edging. Turn the collar ends up and stitch the collar into place. I find a 1/4" seam works for me. Clip the curves, NOT too deeply Turn the other edge under, also 1/4" and stitch over the other seam line, hiding andy awful mistakes you may want hidden. Note that the collar stands up very delightfully! A 3" piece of bias tape may now be centered and stitched 1" on either side of the center to create the illusion of an under kimono. The hanging bits let Hitty lap the undercollar properly - left over right, just like the kimoo. The other wrap , tho this looks like guy clothing this way to us, don't change it- 'cause that right over left indicates that someone in the close family has just died. The obi and its underwrap, the obiage, and the over cord, the obijama- I'm still working out for the girls. I want a quick on and off, and the standard kimono just isn't made from that need. I'm still experimenting. There are nuances about age and marital status that Hitty just skews- a 200 year old spinster ! I made her sleeves more mature, but honestly, I think Hitty is entitled to furisode that sweep the floor, so if anyone wants longer sleeves, go for it! Just remember that gentle front curve. I have until August of next year , so I'm really putting off the how to make a on and off obi bow- until I use up these last, 3 0r maybe its4 kimono. The girls really have me going! And they'll probably decide to wear Western dress - well at least Con T-shirts for a bit! NancyB of the ever-hopeful quartet |
