Judy Millman's Knitted Shawl and Purse
Hitty Allegra Models the Shawl and Purse.
Hitty Allegra's shawl was knitted with sportweight yarn from JoAnns in a color called Crayon on a #5 needle. Casting on 2 stitches, I knit the first row. Using Stockinette Stitch (row 2 is P, row 3 is K and so on) I increased one st at each end of every row until I had 40 sts. For the edging,I used whatever crochet hook worked as I really do not know how to crochet and follow pictures in a book when doing edging. I think I did a sc and then did 3 chain stitches and then went back into the next edge st with a sc and then the 3 chain stitches. Does this make sense? (yes, that makes a nice edging--editor)
I also made a little cross-body shoulder purse that has a flap closure with one bead or button. The purse is large enough to hold a penny. The purse was done with same yarn and needles. Cast on 6 stitches. Knit in stockinette stitch until piece is long enough to wrap around the penny (about 15 rows). Next row dec one st at ea end (4 sts). next row dec again one st ea end (2 sts). Bind off. I then crochetted a chain st strap long enough to go cross body over her shoulder. Sew sides together, sew a bead or button on front under flap and then attach the shoulder strap.
