Final Remarks
I enjoyed the character of Miss Hickory very much. She had regrets at the end
of her short life as a twig doll for the way she treated her friends and the
things she missed along the way, but she had a heart. She was crusty on the
outside but inside I believe she truly enjoyed her friends, even though she
would not let on to them. With some people, being sharp is a way of showing
someone you do care. For instance, she was really outspoken to Crow, but inside
she obviously cared for him. He obviously cared for her.
I am going to miss her. Although she is happy with her new life as part of the tree (and I am happy for her), I also claim to be selfish and wish she could have gone on with more adventures.
I realize I must now make a Miss Hickory doll for my collection!
____________________________
I thought the book a bit disjointed. Some chapters just didn’t
seem to fit in and one wonders why it was even there. There was not enough adventure
involving Miss Hickory.
_____________________________
I enjoyed this book on many levels--it was fun, fast, and although
confusing at times (why the wild heifer chapter?) it was a simple, fun tale.
And I certainly enjoyed adding another doll to my family. Miss Hickory was always
a favorite book!
_______________________________
The book was a fun, quick read, especially after a long day at work. I wish
Miss Hickory's head had not been eaten by squirrel. It would have been more
fun and less scary if she had had a fall and her head fell off only to sprout
into a new tree later. Her life would have given life to two trees -- one to
the new Hickory tree and one to the Apple tree.
_______________________________
It is a fitting end to Miss Hickory to become part of the apple tree and bring
life to it again, but I got attached to her and her crusty little disposition
and will miss her. She will never wander around again and talk and I am sure
Crow and the animals will miss her. On the other hand, she is in her natural
state and very happy and there is a purpose to her life so I guess we are left
with that. It is hard to explain.
_______________________________
You explained it well. I get what you are saying. And I understand why you feel
that way! It ennobled her.
_______________________________
That is why I think I didn't want to become attached to her. She was
a wild thing that needed to fly free of me. However, I will say that while in
Oklahoma, I collected some wonderful oak acorns and have already started making
a cute little doll with them. So I guess I must have given in to her more than
I thought. The acorns are a little more delicate than the Hickory nuts or Cherry
Pits, but they have those wonderful caps!
